Gallery of Amber Insect Families

Following are selected amber insect images from the thousands I have created over the last 40 years. They represent over a dozen of the most common of the over 780 families that exist. In many cases, precise identification is difficult, and might be open to debate. It is important to remember that most of these insect specimens are over dozens of millions of years old,

It is also important to kee in mind that the provenance of of many, if not most of them, is relatively unknown. They were obtained in a variety of ways, with their origin vaguely, if at all understood.  Many were purchased from jewelers who knew nothing of their origin. Many were gifts from from friends from their world travels, who also knew little about their provenance. Some were purchased at mineral shows. which were the best at determining their origins.

The location of many of my specimens is a also difficult which also makes dating them difficult.  I have many copal specimens, which are from relatively young amber, usually about a million years or younger.  Most of these are from Latin America – the Dominican Republic, Colombia, etc.  My specimens from the Baltic are much, much older, usually over 40 million years.
